In line with the celebration of Nutrition month this July, the Provincial Nutrition Office, in collaboration with TESDA – Catanduanes and Cabugao School of Handicraft and Cottage Industries (CSHCI) will hold the 1st staging of 'Luto ni Nanay' Cooking Challenge Competition on July 29, 2019.
The competition was proposed and approved on a meeting held on Wednesday, July 18, 2019, with Acting Governor Shirley A. Abundo presiding, attended in by the provincial department heads and local government units (LGUs) representatives.
The challenge in 'Luto ni Nanay' is for participants to prepare and cook an appetizer dish consisting mainly of 1 kilo squash and malunggay leaves and one entrée meal with 1 kilo soaked soya beans as the key ingredient.

A limited time of three hours will be allocated for the said competition. Contestants, composed of only two members, are required to present five dishes for judging and shall use all the ingredients marketed from the ones provided by the committee.
In an interview with Elpidio R. Tuboro, Vocational School Administrator III of TESDA-CSHCI, he said vegetables are chosen for their low cost, high nutritional value and widespread availability in the province. He also explained how soya can produce zero waste products and its certain characteristic to be turned into various dishes.
'Mahirap mapakain ng gulay ang mga bata. At least ito (soya) parang lasang beef and chicken.'
(It is difficult to feed vegetables to children. At least this (soya) tastes like beef and chicken.)
FOOD FOR THOUGHT. Contest details are further discussed by Provincial Nutrition Officer Tess Curativo. Contestants will be tasked with producing innovative dishes using certain vegetables chosen for their high nutritional value and availability in the locale.
'We also want to create awareness over this activity. We want to recognize naman sa ngayon itong mga head departments and their employees plus lahat na LGU para i-boost natin ito and create an impact to benefit all municipalities and barangays,' Tuboro added.
